This photograph, depicting Wagner’s Tannhäuser  Overture, displays Venus, the beautiful goddess of love, composing her vision of a pilgrimage as an ethereal dusk falls around her. She paints the three ships at daybreak, dancing among the waves, representing the three parts of the opera culminating in the need for salvation (trinity) at the end of the journey.
