What should I wear?
There’s a performance that suits your style! If you are looking for a concert where you can come all dressed up and have a night on the town, Masterworks Saturday, Haydn Festival at Bon Air Baptist and Pops are what we’d suggest. If you are looking for something a little more casual, try Masterworks Friday or Monday or Haydn Festival at Randolph-Macon College. If you are looking for a concert where you can wear jeans and flip flops Kicked Back Classics are the concerts for you!
How is the seating assigned in the churches?
Seating is assigned by section and row. Patrons may sit anywhere in the row they are assigned but we ask that all personal belongings (coats, purses, etc.) be stored under the pew or on the coat racks located in the lobby.
What happens if I’m late?
Latecomers will not be seated until the earliest appropriate program break, at the discretion of the house manager. Once you arrive, you will be directed to the entrance closest to your seat. Please note some programs will not allow late seating to happen until intermission. Patrons arriving 30 minutes after the performance has started without a ticket will be turned away.
Can I bring a camera?
Cameras as well as other recording devices are strictly prohibited in the concert venues. Pictures may be taken in the lobby before or after the concert.
When do performances start and end?
Richmond Symphony performances vary in length. Most Masterworks, Pops and Haydn Festival concerts last between an hour and 30 minutes to two hours. With a 15-20 minute intermission. Kicked Back Classics and other family concerts usually last an hour with no intermission. Please call the box office at 804.788.1212 for exact timing of concerts.
When is it appropriate to applaud?
The audience can applaud to welcome the conductor when he or she walks out onto the stage. It is also appropriate to clap after the final movement of an entire work. A good rule of thumb is clap when the conductor either turns around or steps off the podium.
What is the Pre-Concert Lecture?
Pre-Concert lectures occur before the Masterworks concerts on Saturday and Monday nights. The lectures are held in the chapel of First Baptist Church and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Usually last about 30 minutes, the conductor and sometimes the guest artists will give insight into the pieces being performed. This can include where the pieces came from, when and why they were written, what to listen for during the concert and other entertaining information that will make your concert experience one of a kind!
Are children allowed at the symphony?
Yes! We encourage children of all ages to join us for a symphony concert. Kicked Back Classics is a great series to start your children with. This is an informal concert where we encourage patrons to get up, move around, dance to the music or get something to eat. Other concerts which include: Masterworks, Haydn Festival and Pops, children are $10. These concerts usually last longer and we encourage patrons with young children to select a seat closest to an exit or on an aisle in case the child gets restless.
